Connecting Parliamentarians

Consequence upon earlier correspondence Ms. Gabriela Cuevas Barron, President Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), visited the Secretariat of International Parliamentarian Congress on 23rd August, 2020. A Meeting between H.E. Ms. Gabriela Cuevas Barron, President Inter-Parliamentary Union and H.E. Senator Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani, President International Parliamentarians Congress (IPC) was held at IPC Secretariat, Islamabad on 23rd August, 2020.

The meeting acknowledged the interdependent and interrelated nature of economic, developmental, geopolitical, and security-related challenges which call for greater collaboration not only among member Parliaments but also among individual Parliamentarians. Both noted that the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) being the oldest parliamentary body established in 1889 and the International Parliamentarians Congress (IPC) being the youngest parliamentary body established in 2019 offer a unique opportunity for Parliamentarians across the globe to capitalize on the strengths of both organizations for the advancement of the agenda of inclusive and sustainable development.

Both Presidents agreed and singed Joint Communique during the meeting, wherein they jointly recognize that the work undertaken by the Parliaments across the globe in steering the agenda of inclusive development and the need for collaboration on the areas of climate change, food security, human rights, peace, conflict resolution, health research, quality control and observation of elections in the world.

Further, it was acknowledged that the need to capitalize on the strengths of both IPU and IPC and ensure greater engagement and remain Cognizant of the need to address the multidimensional challenges of the 21st century by building the capacity of the Parliamentarians. They further acknowledged the need to instil robustness and responsiveness in Parliaments to build the trust of the global citizenry in the democratic institution’s ability to deliver on the agenda of inclusive development through knowledge-sharing exercises.

The President IPU being a member of Mexican Parliament became a member of IPC by signing its membership form.
